The Shady Garden
Often seen as difficult, the shady area can be lush and luxuriant. The shady area is often filled with dark-leaved plants, which usually tolerate it well, but you can lift it with lighter and brighter foliage. Consider including Aucubas with their stunning variegated leaves, and Fatsia for their large, bright green leaves. Choisya ternata Sundance will not be quite as vivid as in the sun, but will still brighten a shady area considerably. For flowers, use Viburnum tinus which will flower from late autumn to early spring, the architectural Mahonia with its rich yellow spiky flowers, and Rhododendrons and Camellias for an abundance of spring flower. You can include Buxus for edging or as a specimen, and Vincas and ferns for under planting.
Please note plants available in each garden will vary from those shown depending on availability and time of year.
